The Detroit Tigers may have given a significant clue regarding their intentions for All-Star pitcher Tarik Skubal ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline.

While many believe Skubal is unlikely to be traded, recent actions suggest the Tigers are open to the possibility.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported that a Tigers scout has been watching the Orioles’ Triple-A Norfolk affiliate, which boasts top prospects like Jackson Holliday, Coby Mayo, Connor Norby, and Kyle Stowers.

The Orioles’ farm system is among the best in baseball, with three players in MLB.com’s top 15 prospect rankings. Jackson Holliday, ranked No. 1 overall, had a brief major league stint this season. Catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo is ranked 12th, and infielder Coby Mayo is 15th.

The Orioles currently lead the American League East by two games. Acquiring Skubal could significantly boost their playoff and World Series chances. With a strong collection of prospects, the Orioles could present an enticing offer for Skubal, who is expected to secure a substantial pay raise in the offseason.

Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY noted that while a Skubal trade is a longshot, the Tigers are listening and would only move him for an overwhelming offer. He added that the Orioles have the talent to make such a deal, potentially becoming World Series favorites by pairing Skubal with Corbin Burnes.

Skubal signed a one-year, $2.65 million deal with the Tigers last January to avoid arbitration. His performance this season, with a 19-19 record, 2.41 ERA, and 173 ERA+, makes him a valuable asset.

The Tigers, currently 11 games out of the top spot in the AL West and six games from the last wild-card spot, may consider a trade as they are not viewed as playoff contenders this season.
