Everton is making strides to secure the signing of Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto, despite facing competition from Newcastle United, reports TEAMtalk.
The Italy international is eager to join Everton this summer, which boosts the club’s confidence in finalizing the transfer.
Leeds United has set a firm asking price of no less than £25 million for the 20-year-old attacker. Everton, however, should be cautious about overpaying, as Gnonto’s recent Championship performances raise questions about his value. Though undeniably talented, Gnonto’s output in the Championship was modest, scoring just eight goals in 36 appearances, which is not particularly impressive for a player whose team was often favored.
The transition to the Premier League, known for its higher intensity and demands, adds another layer of risk.
Everton must thoroughly assess whether Gnonto can consistently perform at this higher level. Overpaying for a player who has yet to prove himself consistently in top-tier football could be a risky financial move for the club.
To mitigate this risk, Everton should aim to negotiate a transfer fee closer to £20 million. This approach would minimize financial exposure while acquiring a potentially valuable young player.
