Texas Football is determined to prove that last year’s College Football Playoff appearance was no fluke.

The Longhorns, who narrowly missed a showdown with Michigan in the CFP Finals, are back with renewed determination to make another run this season.

Entering the new season ranked fourth in the coaches poll, the spotlight is firmly on Texas. Below are three compelling reasons why the Longhorns have a strong chance of returning to the College Football Playoff.

Why Texas football will return to the College Football Playoff in 2024:

1. Field has expanded

This season’s expansion of the College Football Playoff field significantly enhances Texas’ chances of making it back.

The Longhorns no longer need to finish in the top four to secure a spot. Under the new rules, Power Five conference champions automatically qualify, leaving seven additional slots for other high-ranking teams. Given the rigorous SEC schedules, even teams that don’t reach the SEC Championship game could earn a playoff berth as a wildcard. The committee’s emphasis on schedule strength over overall record could work in Texas’ favor, especially compared to teams from the Big 12 and Big 10.

This new format allows the Longhorns some margin for error, meaning they could suffer a couple of losses and still make the playoffs.

2. Longhorns should finish with a solid resume

Texas is expected to conclude its inaugural SEC season with a strong 10-2 or 9-3 record.

While this might not be enough to get them to the SEC Championship game, it would undoubtedly capture the attention of the playoff committee. Losses to powerhouses like Georgia, Florida, or Oklahoma could still leave the Longhorns in a strong position, thanks to the strength of their overall schedule.

With a roster full of returning players who have the experience and drive to return to the playoffs, Texas is well-positioned to make another run.

3. Quinn Ewers leading the team

Quarterback Quinn Ewers has plenty to prove this season as he aims to boost his stock for the NFL Draft.

His leadership and performance will be crucial if Texas is to make a return to the College Football Playoff. While future star Arch Manning is waiting in the wings, this season is Ewers’ time to shine. His determination was evident during SEC media day, and he appears ready to take the Longhorns back to the playoffs. If Texas makes it, Ewers’ leadership will be a key reason why.
