The Chelsea left-back is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund in Germany, where he is enjoying regular playing time. He scored a goal in the Champions League quarterfinals, aiding his team in eliminating Atletico Madrid from the competition.

Ian Maatsen, currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea, played a pivotal role in Dortmund’s Champions League progression by scoring his first goal in the competition during their recent 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid.

This victory allowed Dortmund to overcome a deficit and advance with a 5-4 aggregate score, setting them up for a semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Maatsen’s decisive goal marks a significant highlight in a season that began with uncertainty.

“It was a surprise,” said the full-back, whose loan deal runs until the end of the season.

“I always had the belief to play for Chelsea but unfortunately for some reasons it didn’t work out

“Now I’m here, I’m very grateful for this opportunity and this moment. I can say I’m very proud of myself, kept believing in myself and came here to play my game at the highest level.”

Despite a highly successful loan at Burnley last season, Maatsen’s return to Chelsea was met with limited opportunities, culminating in just one Premier League start in the first half of the season.

Chelsea left back Ian Maatsen.
Ian Maatsen couldn’t break into Chelsea team, prompting his loan move.

This lack of game time prompted a January move to Dortmund in pursuit of more consistent play, reaffirming his dedication and self-belief.

Before moving to Dortmund, Maatsen faced a potential £31.5 million transfer back to Burnley, which he declined after Chelsea agreed to the deal.

Instead, he chose to extend his contract with Chelsea, although his future there remains uncertain given a £35 million release clause in his contract.

This move could potentially see him leave Stamford Bridge permanently. Through it all, Maatsen has remained focused, using his challenges as fuel to showcase his talent on one of football’s biggest stages.
