Arsenal is reportedly shifting its focus from acquiring a striker to targeting a wide forward in the summer transfer window, following Benjamin Sesko’s decision to stay with RB Leipzig.

This development, widely reported on Tuesday, has influenced the club’s transfer strategy significantly.

Sesko, who had been a priority target for Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, decided to remain at Leipzig, leaving Arsenal to reconsider their options in the forward positions.

Initially, Arsenal had shown interest in Joshua Zirkzee as a potential alternative striker.

However, recent reports, including insights from Simon Collings of The Standard, indicate that Arsenal might now prioritize signing a winger. Among the players being considered is Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao.

Williams, who has a release clause of €50 million (£42.1 million), has caught the attention of Arsenal’s management. The 21-year-old winger had an impressive 2023/24 season, scoring eight goals and providing 17 assists in 37 appearances for Athletic Club.

Arsenal may priortize signing Nico Williams over a striker.

Additionally, Williams is currently representing Spain at Euro 2024, which could further showcase his talents on a bigger stage.

Earlier reports by The Telegraph suggested that Arsenal might pivot to a winger depending on the availability of their striker targets.

This strategy appears to be coming to fruition, with Williams emerging as a viable option.

David Ornstein has also confirmed Arsenal’s interest in Williams, while noting that other teams are also in the race for his signature, making the transfer competition intense.

Athletic Bilbao seems to be preparing for Williams’ potential departure by securing Alvaro Djalo from Braga, indicating that they are ready to move on from their young star.

Despite the substantial wage demands and transfer fee, Williams’ acquisition could fill a critical gap for Arsenal, adding depth and versatility to their attacking options.

As the summer transfer window progresses, it will be interesting to see if Arsenal can successfully secure Williams’ services and how this strategic shift might impact their performance in the upcoming season.
