Bayer Leverkusen beat Mainz at home by a margin of two goals to one (2-1) on Friday to extend their Bundesliga lead by eleven (11) points, setting a new German record of thirty three (33) matches unbeaten streak in the process.

An early goal from Grannit Xhaka and a long range strike from outside the box by Robert Andrich was enough to secure Three points for Bayer Leverkusen, courtesy of Robin Zentner goalkeeping error which allowed the ball to slip through his grip into the net.

Leverkusen has now won twenty nine (29) matches and drawn four (4) out of Thirty three (33) matches this season, breaking the record set by Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich between 2019 to 2020.

Speaking to Journalist after the match, Bayer’s Coach Xabi Alonso,  said :

” I dont care about records before they happen, but once they happens am really proud. “

” It’s great we achieved that feat, you don’t get medals for it but it’s nice to go through that process. We are achieving great things but we don’t want to stop.”

Alonso also played down the rumours linking him with his former clubs Liverpool and Real Madrid for the coaching role, tagging the rumours “hypothetical”.

Speaking after during the post match session with journalist, Granite Xhaka who scored his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen also gave an insight about the game. He stated that:

“We deserve to be where we are. When you are eleven points ahead of second place Bayern Munich, there’s alot to lose. We will keep working day by day, game after game, stay positive, and I’m sure we will be able to keep getting our win. “

Robert Andrich the game winner for Leverkusen also spoke:

” We have to be honest and say we didn’t play a great game and were a bit lucky to win, but we can’t complain about the three points.” He told DAZN
