The latest Wimbledon draw presents a mix of favorable and challenging paths for top seeds, creating a stir in the tennis world.

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, key figures in the tournament, are set on dramatically different courses.

Sinner’s Uphill Battle

Jannik Sinner, now the world No. 1, finds himself facing a daunting series of matches despite his top seeding.

Fresh off a title win in Halle, which dispelled doubts about his grass-court game, Sinner’s journey at Wimbledon is fraught with potential pitfalls.

In the first round, he will confront German clay-court specialist Yannick Hanfmann. This is merely the beginning of a challenging route that could see him facing 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round, a match likely to draw significant attention on Centre Court.

Should he advance, Sinner might meet Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor in round three. Although Sinner holds a 5-0 record against Griekspoor, the Dutchman’s previous grass-court title in Rosmalen suggests a potential upset. The subsequent rounds don’t get any easier, with potential matchups against big-serving Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev, both formidable opponents.

Should Sinner manage to navigate these tests, he could face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. Given the strenuous draw, experts predict Sinner might be worn out by the time he reaches Alcaraz, making a victory improbable.

Djokovic’s Favorable Path

Conversely, Novak Djokovic’s prospects appear bright.

After undergoing knee surgery on June 5, Djokovic’s participation was uncertain, but his recent week of practice at the All England Club confirmed his return. The seven-time champion’s first-round match against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva is unlikely to strain him.

His path looks clear until a possible fourth-round encounter with Holger Rune, who has struggled with form recently, making his progress to that stage doubtful.

Djokovic’s quarter-final might see him face dark horse Hubi Hurkacz, presenting a more significant challenge. However, avoiding Sinner and Alcaraz until the final bodes well for Djokovic. If his knee holds up, Djokovic is poised to reach another final, potentially claiming a record-equaling eighth Wimbledon title.

Players to Watch

Several other players are worth noting. Jack Draper, who recently defeated Alcaraz at Queen’s Club, is anticipated to perform well.

Draper’s first round against Elias Ymer is manageable, and a potential second-round match against Cameron Norrie could set the stage for a deep run.

Hubert Hurkacz, with his strong grass-court credentials, and America’s Sebastian Korda, whose powerful game suits grass, are also dark horses. Korda’s early rounds are tricky, particularly against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and possibly Stefanos Tsitsipas, but he remains a formidable contender.

Summary

While Sinner faces a tough draw that could test his resilience, Djokovic’s path seems comparatively smooth, barring any issues with his knee. Both players, alongside emerging talents like Draper and Korda, will make for an exciting Wimbledon.
