Atalanta has officially announced the acquisition of Ben Godfrey from Everton in a deal valued at approximately €10 million plus potential bonuses.
The 26-year-old defender swiftly completed his medical examination and signed the contract at Atalanta’s Zingonia training ground.
Godfrey, who can play as a central defender, right-back, or defensive midfielder, brings versatility to the Italian club. He has earned two senior caps for England and has experience playing in different positions. Godfrey’s career began in the York City academy, and he later played for Norwich City and Shrewsbury Town. In October 2020, he transferred to Everton for €27.5 million.
With his contract at Everton set to expire in June 2025, Atalanta capitalized on the opportunity to secure his services for a reported fee of €9 million, plus €1 million in bonuses. However, Sky Sport Italia reports suggest the total value of the deal could rise to €12 million with additional add-ons.
This move marks Atalanta’s second signing of the season, following the activation of their option to buy Charles De Ketelaere from Milan after his loan spell. Godfrey brings significant Premier League experience to Atalanta, having made 112 appearances and providing three assists during his time in England.
Atalanta is preparing for a strong season ahead, having qualified for the Champions League and winning the Europa League this term with a decisive 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
The addition of Godfrey is expected to bolster their defensive options as they aim to compete on multiple fronts in the upcoming season.
