Brentford are in advanced negotiations to secure Leeds United’s promising midfielder Archie Gray in a deal potentially worth £40 million.

The 18-year-old, an England Under-21 international, has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs following an impressive season at Elland Road. However, Brentford have moved quickly to finalize the transfer, aiming to wrap up the agreement over the weekend.

The proposed deal includes a base fee and approximately £5 million in potential add-ons. If completed, this transfer would set a new record for Brentford, surpassing their previous highest signing of Igor Thiago from Club Brugge for £30 million.

Gray’s rise through the Leeds academy, culminating in 52 appearances last season under manager Daniel Farke, has marked him as one of the club’s standout performers.

Leeds, who missed out on promotion back to the Premier League, are expected to offload several key players this summer. Alongside Gray, young talents like Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto are considered valuable assets. With the club’s finances under scrutiny, the sale of these players could provide necessary funding for future investments.

Gray, the great-nephew of Leeds legend Eddie Gray, has been with the club since the age of eight and has represented England at various youth levels.

He expressed gratitude for the rigorous training under former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, highlighting the invaluable lessons learned despite the challenges.

Brentford look to strengthen their squad, securing Gray would not only bolster their midfield options but also signal their ambitions for the upcoming Premier League season.

The club remains optimistic about completing the record-breaking transfer soon.
