Ben Johnson’s anticipated departure from West Ham United to Ipswich Town is expected to be officially announced on Monday, July 1, according to TEAMtalk.
After completing his medical and agreeing to a four-year contract at Portman Road, the 24-year-old defender will join the newly promoted side on a free transfer, with his contract at West Ham expiring the same day.
Johnson has been one of Ipswich Town’s primary targets as manager Kieran McKenna aims to strengthen his squad to compete in the Premier League and avoid relegation. Despite West Ham’s attempts to retain him, including a last-minute five-year offer from new manager Julen Lopetegui, Johnson decided to leave in pursuit of more regular first-team football.
Lopetegui’s arrival brought renewed hope that the full-back might reconsider, but the appeal of becoming a key player at Ipswich proved irresistible.
Throughout the past season, Johnson had turned down several contract extensions under former manager David Moyes, signaling his intent to seek new opportunities.
His decision was influenced by a desire for more playing time, having spent multiple seasons as a backup at West Ham. Ipswich Town’s remarkable back-to-back promotions made the prospect of joining a dynamic, ambitious club particularly enticing for Johnson.
As West Ham prepares for Johnson’s exit, the club is reportedly eyeing replacements, including Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters, as they look to bolster their squad amid potential other departures. Discussions are ongoing regarding Flynn Downes and Vladimir Coufal, indicating a period of transition for the Hammers.
Despite the efforts to keep Johnson at the club, the late push proved insufficient. However, should Walker-Peters join, he would likely serve as a solid addition to the squad.
West Ham remains active in the transfer market, signaling their intent to strengthen key positions as they navigate these changes.
