Manchester United remains determined to acquire Everton’s promising center-back Jarrad Branthwaite, despite the substantial valuation placed on him by his current club.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Manchester United’s interest in the young defender is undeterred by Everton’s significant demands. However, any potential deal would require Everton to lower their asking price.

Following Raphael Varane’s exit and ongoing injury concerns with Lisandro Martinez, Manchester United has prioritized strengthening their defense. Branthwaite, who earned recognition for his impressive performances with Everton, is seen as a prime target.

During the 2023/24 season, Branthwaite’s formidable presence contributed to Everton achieving the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League. His outstanding displays have elevated his market value, leading Everton to demand a high transfer fee.

In their initial approach, Manchester United offered £35 million plus add-ons for Branthwaite, but this was swiftly rejected by Everton. The club values the defender much higher, using Harry Maguire’s £80 million transfer to Manchester United as a benchmark. Jacobs notes that while United is keen on securing Branthwaite, they are not willing to meet Everton’s steep valuation.

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has faced criticism for attempting to complete transfers inexpensively. Ratcliffe, aiming to make impactful signings, sees Branthwaite as a significant addition. However, the club’s reluctance to overspend might hinder the deal before the transfer window closes.

Given the high price tag, Manchester United has also identified Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt as a potential, more affordable alternative. De Ligt, who has played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is open to a move to Old Trafford. The club’s new sporting director, Dan Ashworth, previously expressed interest in signing De Ligt for Newcastle United and might now facilitate this move for Manchester United.

As negotiations continue, it remains to be seen if Manchester United can secure Branthwaite’s services or pivot to other targets to bolster their defense for the upcoming season.
