Chelsea has set a new record, albeit not one they will take pride in, following their defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup finals.

A late header by Liverpool’s captain Virgil Van Dijk in the extra time proved sufficient to clinch the title for The Reds against The Blues, thereby establishing a new record for Mauricio Pochettino side as the sole team to suffer six consecutive cup final losses at Wembley.

The cup finals Chelsea has succumbed to in the past six encounters include:

  •  2019 League Cup
  • 2020 FA Cup
  • 2021 FA Cup
  • 2022 League Cup
  • 2023 FA Cup
  • 2024 League Cup

The blues failed to take advantage of the absence of key Liverpool stars sidelined in the finals to injuries. The Mersey side Club went to Wembley as underdogs without Mohammed Salah, Darwin Nunez , Alisson Becker, Trend Alexander- Arnold , Dominik Szoboszslai and Diego Jota. They also lost Ryan Gravenberch in the first half to injury caused by a dangerous tackle from Moises Caicedo.

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest for a trophy in the premier league continues after Chelsea lost to Liverpool at Wembley in his first cup final as manager for The Blues.

Speaking to Journalists after the match about today’s defeat, Pochettino said :

“We have to learn to compete at this level,” he admitted.

There were periods when the Blues looked up to it, but ultimately they quite embarrassingly faded in the spotlight. The more starting players that went off, the more vulnerable the Blues looked and the more devoid of experience.

It shouldn’t have been like that – by the end, our opposition team was just as inexperienced, if not more, than ours. This level is the EFL Cup final, not the Champions League final. These players should not be so thrown.
