Thomas Galdames, the 25-year-old Chilean defender, has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers, adding to the club’s recent interest in Latin American talent.
Following the failed transfer of Jose Cordoba, Galdames emerged as a prime target, alongside several unnamed Belgian teams.
Known primarily as a natural center-back, Galdames has recently been transitioning into an aggressive left-back, a role that has garnered significant attention as he prepares to leave his current club, Argentine side Godoy Cruz.

With Chile’s recent elimination from the Copa America, speculation surrounding Galdames’ future has intensified. A report from Belgium provides updates on Rangers’ pursuit of the defender, revealing that Belgian club Royal Antwerp is also in the race.
Initial reports in June identified Antwerp as a serious contender for Galdames’ signature, suggesting a transfer battle between Antwerp and Rangers.
Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws now indicates that Antwerp is on the verge of securing Galdames, following their recent acquisition of Ayrton Costa, another left-sided South American defender from Independiente.
This development suggests that Antwerp is prioritizing bolstering their left-back position ahead of the new season. With Rangers’ interest reportedly cooling, Antwerp appears to be in the lead for Galdames’ transfer.
Rangers have already made significant moves in the left-back department this summer. The club signed Brazilian left-back Jefte following Borna Barisic’s departure to Trabzonspor. Additionally, Turkish defender Ridvan Yilmaz is expected to remain at Rangers, despite interest from newly-promoted Bundesliga club St Pauli.
The Scottish club has also added Clinton Nsiala, a promising 20-year-old left-sided center-back from AC Milan, and retains Ben Davies, though his future remains uncertain.
Given these developments, Rangers seem well-prepared for the upcoming season with ample options on the left side of their defense.
However, if Galdames were to join Antwerp and Rangers face further changes in their defensive lineup, the club might look back with regret at missing out on the Chilean talent.
