West Ham United are showing strong interest in Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn, but financial obstacles could complicate the transfer.
Ajax manager Francesco Farioli, despite having significant plans for Bergwijn in the upcoming season, acknowledges that the club might need to sell the player due to his high transfer value.
According to De Telegraaf, Ajax would consider offers in the range of €25 million to €30 million (£21 million-£25.2 million) for the 26-year-old.
The Hammers, who previously expressed interest in Bergwijn during the January transfer window but couldn’t proceed with the deal, must sell a player to fund his purchase.
Bergwijn, who is currently on holiday, is contemplating his future after holding discussions with Farioli. Although Farioli is reluctant to let the winger go, he may have no choice if West Ham submits an appropriate bid.
Bergwijn has proven versatile across the front line and could complement West Ham’s attacking options, including Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, and Mohammed Kudus. His Premier League experience, gained during his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, makes him an attractive prospect. Despite his struggles at Tottenham, Bergwijn has thrived since returning to Ajax, netting 29 goals in 76 appearances.
The potential signing of Bergwijn could be a strategic move for West Ham, especially with uncertainty surrounding Paqueta’s future. The club needs to carefully navigate the transfer market, possibly offloading a player to secure Bergwijn’s services.
