Mike Muscala’s journey in the NBA has come to an end after 11 seasons and stints with seven different teams, including a brief period with the Boston Celtics during the 2022-23 season.

Muscala, 33, announced his retirement via a text to Joel Lorenzi of The Oklahoman, expressing gratitude for his career. Muscala’s father revealed that his next step involves pursuing a master’s degree in sports management, with aspirations to move into basketball coaching or administration.

Muscala’s tenure with the Celtics began in February 2023 when he was acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Justin Jackson and two second-round picks. In his 20 games with Boston, Muscala averaged 5.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, showcasing his ability to space the floor with a 38.5% shooting rate from three-point range.

His NBA career saw him being part of significant trades, including a three-team deal that sent him to the Washington Wizards alongside Danilo Gallinari and Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies. The trade brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics. Muscala’s final NBA season was marked by short stints with the Wizards, Thunder, and Detroit Pistons, the latter waiving him after 13 games.

Muscala’s professional journey began with the Atlanta Hawks, where he spent a significant portion of his career. However, he found a special connection with the Thunder, spending over three seasons with the team. Reflecting on his time in Oklahoma City, Muscala expressed deep appreciation for the city’s community and the support of its fans.

“It means a lot,” Muscala said about his return to the Thunder in May. “The city, the fans, the way they support the team, and what the team means to the community are things I can relate to. I’ll always be a Thunder fan no matter what happens in my life.”

As Muscala transitions into the next phase of his life, he leaves behind a legacy of a resilient and adaptable player who made an impact on every team he joined.
