John Daly, the 1995 Champion Golfer of the Year, has withdrawn from The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Daly cited a knee injury as the reason for his departure following a challenging first round where he posted a 10-over 81. This round included seven bogeys and a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole.

This is not Daly’s first injury-related withdrawal this year. He also withdrew from the PGA Championship in May due to a thumb injury, after an 11-over 82 in the opening round.

Daly, known for his victories at the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship, has struggled to make cuts in recent years, with his last major cut being in 2012.

Despite his past successes, Daly has had a tough season on the PGA Tour Champions, with only three sub-70 rounds in 11 events.

His best finish this year was a tie for 56th at the Kaulig Companies Championship. At 58, Daly’s exemption for The Open will expire in two years, making next year’s event at Royal Portrush potentially his last.
