Rory McIlroy expressed resignation after failing to make the cut at The Open, held at Royal Troon.

Battling challenging weather conditions, McIlroy finished 11 over par after 36 holes. The four-time major champion’s performance deteriorated, with the wind heavily impacting his game. He managed just four holes in his second round before conceding defeat.

McIlroy had shown promise earlier in the month, securing a tie for fourth at the Scottish Open. However, his confidence was short-lived as he struggled significantly in Scotland. On the first day, he was 13 shots off the lead, ending with seven over par. His second day mirrored the first, including a triple bogey on the fourth hole.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy acknowledged his early mistakes sealed his fate.

“Once I made the eight on the fourth hole, that was it,” he admitted. He accepted that he wouldn’t recover sufficiently to make the cut, rendering the remaining holes “pretty meaningless.”

Despite a more stable finish to his round, McIlroy was unable to overcome the adverse conditions. He noted difficulties adjusting to the gusty winds, which impacted his play throughout the tournament.

This experience echoed his struggles at the Masters earlier this year, where wind similarly affected his performance.
