Junior Firpo’s tenure at Leeds United has often been shrouded in uncertainty, but recent remarks by Daniel Farke have shed light on the club’s stance regarding their first-choice left-back.
In a post-match interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post following Leeds’ 3-0 victory over Harrogate Town in their initial pre-season friendly on July 19, Farke underscored Firpo’s significance to the team.
Firpo, who netted the opening goal in the 12th minute, has been linked with a potential £4.2 million transfer to Real Betis. Such a move would significantly weaken Leeds’ left-back options.
Farke praised Firpo, stating:
“I never made a secret out of it that I think that Junior Firpo on this level is an outstanding full-back, with his experience, his technical ability, his strength going forward. He is one of the more experienced lads in my group, and for that he is also a key player in my thoughts going forward. Of course he will be important.”
Firpo has just one year left on his Elland Road contract, meaning he could leave for free next summer. Despite this, it is in Leeds United’s best interest to keep him for the upcoming season. The club recently filled a vacancy on the right side of defense by signing Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United, but losing Firpo would create a significant gap on the left.
Sam Byram, who can play in either full-back position, is an option, but Firpo is the only natural left-back in the squad.
His attacking capabilities are a rare asset among Championship defenders. Unless Real Betis presents an offer Leeds cannot refuse—a scenario deemed unlikely given their bargain deals for Marc Roca and Diego Llorente—Firpo is expected to stay.
Firpo’s impressive start to pre-season might motivate him to help Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League. Success in this endeavor would provide the financial stability for Leeds to let him go for free next summer if necessary.
