Former Leeds United winger Ian Poveda has secured a permanent move to Sunderland after being released by the Whites.
Poveda, who joined Leeds from Manchester City in January 2020, had loan spells at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, and Sheffield Wednesday during his time with the club. Despite interest from Sheffield Wednesday, where he spent last season on loan, the 24-year-old Colombia international has opted to join Sunderland on a three-year deal with an option for an additional year.
In his statement to Sunderland’s official website, Poveda expressed his excitement about the move, emphasizing his commitment to the team and his eagerness to get on the pitch. He highlighted his creative playing style and confidence in one-on-one situations, promising to work hard for the team.
Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, praised Poveda’s capabilities, noting his strength in one-on-one scenarios and his ability to accelerate and change the tempo of play.
Speakman also emphasized the club’s confidence in providing the right environment for Poveda to develop further.
Poveda, who has been capped twice for Colombia, made 30 appearances for Leeds during his time at Elland Road.
