Leeds United have introduced their new ‘leadership group’ for the upcoming season, naming Ethan Ampadu as club captain, with Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier serving as vice-captains.

This decision comes amidst a period of significant changes implemented by manager Daniel Farke, who has been reshaping the squad since taking over after last year’s relegation.

The club’s announcement is seen as a strategic move to solidify the core leadership within the team, indicating a clear direction and stability ahead of the new season. As the team undergoes rigorous pre-season training in Germany, the leadership appointments suggest a passing of the baton from former captain Liam Cooper, who departed the club this month.

Ethan Ampadu, now at the helm as captain, will be supported by Struijk and Meslier, reflecting Farke’s confidence in these players’ ability to lead the team. Notably, Meslier’s inclusion in this leadership group suggests that the club has no intention of selling him, despite previous transfer rumors linking him to Marseille.

Reports of Meslier’s potential departure have subsided, reinforcing the belief that he will remain a pivotal part of Leeds’ squad. Meslier, who has a contract until 2026, was instrumental last season, achieving the most clean sheets in the Championship.

This leadership decision indicates the 49ers’ commitment to retaining key players as they aim for a strong performance in the Championship, signaling a refusal to entertain bids for their top talents.
