Defensive end Samson Ebukam, the Indianapolis Colts’ top sack producer from last season, has suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will likely miss the entire upcoming season, according to a team source who spoke with ESPN.

The injury took place during a full-squad practice session on Sunday, delivering a significant setback to the Colts’ highly-regarded defensive line. Ebukam, who led the team with 9.5 sacks in 2023—a career best for the veteran entering his eighth season—also recorded a team-leading three forced fumbles and was second only to three-time Pro Bowl selection DeForest Buckner with 17 quarterback hits.

News of Ebukam’s injury was first reported by the NFL Network.

The Colts had been highlighting the depth of their defensive line throughout the offseason, positioning it as one of the core strengths of their experienced team. Despite the loss of Ebukam, the defensive line retains considerable depth, though replacing his contributions will be crucial.

This development is expected to significantly affect rookie Laiatu Latu, the 15th overall pick and the first defensive player chosen in this year’s draft. The former UCLA star has primarily been working with the second defensive unit during early training camp practices.

Veterans Dayo Odeyingbo and Kwity Paye, who together amassed 16.5 sacks in 2023, will also be expected to take on additional snaps in the wake of Ebukam’s injury.
