Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem expressed his disappointment over NBA insider Shams Charania’s decision to vote for Rudy Gobert instead of Bam Adebayo for the 2023-2024 Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY).
Charania revealed his choice while appearing on Haslem’s podcast, co-hosted with Mike Miller. Gobert’s win places him among NBA legends Ben Wallace and Dikembe Mutombo, each with four DPOY awards.
Haslem, a three-time NBA champion, strongly defended Adebayo’s credentials, highlighting his defensive versatility and his ability to guard multiple positions.
He emphasized Bam’s unique skill set, noting his capability to start games guarding top players like Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Haslem praised Bam’s importance to the Heat’s gritty defensive identity, which he described as a “lunch-pail, hard-hat team.”
In addition to his defensive contributions, Haslem also commended Bam’s offensive role. He pointed out that Adebayo is pivotal in facilitating the team’s offensive flow, often acting as a point forward and creating opportunities for teammates.
Bam’s performance in the 2024 Playoffs further showcased his talent, as he averaged 22.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while guarding the Celtics’ top players.
Despite finishing third in the DPOY voting behind Gobert and Victor Wembanyama, Adebayo was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team for the first time, joining elite defenders like Gobert and Anthony Davis. Haslem’s praise underscores Bam’s significant impact on both ends of the court and his vital role in the Miami Heat’s success.
