Four Everton academy players—Harrison Armstrong, Jenson Metcalfe, Francis Okoronkwo, and Harry Tyrer—could be on the brink of making their first-team debuts after notable performances in pre-season friendlies.
Despite being used in unfamiliar positions, their adaptability caught the attention of Everton’s coaching staff. Armstrong, a natural central player, showcased his skills on the right flank during a 30-minute appearance against Salford City, earning praise from manager Sean Dyche.
Similarly, Metcalfe, typically a central midfielder, played most of his 66 minutes against Salford and Sligo Rovers on the wing. Okoronkwo, who usually plays as a striker, also adapted to a wide role against Salford. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Tyrer remained in his usual position during his 30-minute stint.
Dyche’s willingness to experiment with these young talents highlights their potential importance in the upcoming Premier League season, especially with gaps in the squad that need to be filled.
