JoAnne Carner, a legendary figure in women’s golf, made headlines once again at the age of 85 by shooting a 9-over 80 during the second round of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Fox Chapel.
The round, played on Friday, saw Carner recover from an initial 85 with consecutive birdies on the par-5 second and par-3 third holes, despite rain delays. This remarkable achievement adds to her impressive record in the tournament, where she has shot her age or better eight times since the event’s inception in 2018.
Carner’s illustrious career includes eight U.S. Golf Association titles, with victories in the U.S. Women’s Open in 1971 and 1976, six U.S. Women’s Amateur titles, and a U.S. Girls’ Junior championship.
Despite her valiant efforts, Carner will miss the weekend cut. Meanwhile, Kaori Yamamoto of Japan leads the field, setting a tournament 36-hole scoring record with her second straight 67, and other top players continue to vie for the title.
