Phil Mickelson, a six-time major champion and prominent figure in the LIV Golf circuit, has hinted at the possibility of stepping aside from his playing career if he cannot maintain the level of performance he desires.
During a recent press call previewing the upcoming LIV Golf event in Illinois, Mickelson, 54, reflected on his current standing within the sport and the challenges he faces in competing at the top level.
Mickelson, who joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in 2022 under a reported $200 million contract, currently serves as the captain of the HyFlyers team, where he also holds an equity stake. Despite a relatively modest season with just one top-20 finish and making the cut in two of the four majors in 2024, Mickelson remains committed to his team and the sport’s future.
“I see glimpses and my teammates see glimpses of me being where I expect to be able to compete at this level,” Mickelson remarked. “But I’m also realistic with myself, and if I’m not able to, I’ll step aside and let somebody come on in and take the HyFlyers to new levels.”
Mickelson emphasized his desire to continue competing in the majors and contribute to the development of the HyFlyers, whether as a player or in another capacity.
He also acknowledged that his future schedule and goals might differ significantly from those of younger players, especially if a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf materializes.
“At 54, my schedule and my desires are going to be totally different than most of the players,” he said. “We have to do what’s best for the players on LIV and throughout the game of golf, not just focus on a 54-year-old.”
Mickelson’s comments reflect his deep commitment to the sport and his realistic approach to his evolving role within it.
