Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson is showing steady improvement as he makes his way back from a significant leg injury suffered early in the 2023 season.

Though Thompson did not take part in team drills, he was able to participate in individual and unit exercises during practice. This progress prompted praise from Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who was impressed with the veteran’s resilience and work ethic.

Evero highlighted Thompson’s dedication, noting that the linebacker looked strong and had seamlessly picked up where he left off before his injury.

Evero expressed confidence in Thompson’s recovery, stating that he did not see any signs of a rushed comeback. The 30-year-old linebacker, who missed the remainder of the 2023 season after his injury, remains determined to prove that he can continue playing at an elite level.

As the Panthers prepare for joint practices with the New York Jets and a preseason game on Saturday, Thompson is eager to demonstrate that he hasn’t lost a step. In fact, he believes the injury may have even sharpened his skills.

“I don’t think I’ve lost a step,” Thompson said in July. “I think after breaking my leg, I probably gained a step. I’m way lighter than I used to be, feeling the game more.”

Thompson’s return is highly anticipated as he aims to solidify his role as a key player in the Panthers’ defense this season.
