Despite the growing expectation that rookie quarterback Bo Nix will soon be named Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback, head coach Sean Payton has yet to make it official.
During Wednesday’s training camp, Payton praised Nix for his impressive performance, particularly in the preseason opener against the Colts, where Nix led the team to score on four out of five possessions. However, Payton emphasized that the competition is still open, with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson also in the mix.
In an interview with Kay Adams from the “Up & Adams” show, Payton explained his reasoning for holding off on naming a starter.
He used a metaphor, saying, “The band’s still playing, they have one more song to go, two more songs,” indicating that decisions across various positions, including cornerback and wide receiver, are still pending.
Payton noted that it would be premature to announce a starter at one position without resolving the others.
While Payton acknowledged Nix’s strong play, he also pointed out areas that need improvement. He contrasted Denver’s approach with that of the Bears, who named Caleb Williams as their starter early in the offseason.
Payton hinted that the decision could be finalized within the next couple of weeks, suggesting that Nix could be named the starter before the start of September.
