Joe Hart, the former Manchester City goalkeeper, shared insights on the controversial penalty decision during the Everton versus Brighton match.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Hart discussed the incident where Dominic Calvert-Lewin was initially awarded a penalty after a challenge involving Lewis Dunk. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
Hart explained that the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) clarified the process behind the reversal. He acknowledged the initial penalty seemed justified when viewed in real time but pointed out that upon closer examination, it became evident that Calvert-Lewin had inadvertently stepped on Dunk’s foot, causing him to fall.
Addressing the confusion about the VAR process, Hart revealed:
“We’ve spoken to the PGMOL because we saw that the VAR was being used a little bit differently. The pitch-side screen wasn’t functioning properly, but we’ve been assured that a back-up screen was used by the referee to make the final decision.” He concluded, “I think it’s a good decision.”
Despite the clarity provided, Everton’s performance ended in a disappointing 3-0 loss, marking a tough start to their Premier League campaign.
The incident highlighted familiar issues with their finishing, leaving fans concerned but hopeful for better execution in future matches.
