ESPN’s Max Olson and Eli Lederman have released their much-anticipated list of the top 100 newcomers in college football, with former Alabama safety Caleb Downs securing the No. 1 spot.

Downs made headlines earlier this year after transferring to Ohio State following a stellar freshman season with the Crimson Tide. His impressive performance last year, where he led Alabama in tackles with 107, earned him the title of the first freshman to do so since at least 1970.

Downs’ transfer to Ohio State came as a surprise to many, particularly following the retirement of Alabama’s legendary coach Nick Saban. Olson and Lederman noted that Downs, now a key figure in Ohio State’s secondary, is expected to play a crucial role in the Buckeyes’ pursuit of a national title this season.

While Downs’ departure left a significant void in Alabama’s defense, the Crimson Tide have turned to another talented newcomer, Keon Sabb, who transferred from Michigan. Sabb, though less experienced as a starter, is anticipated to step up and fill the gap left by Downs.

Both Downs and Sabb were recognized by ESPN, with Downs earning the top newcomer ranking and Sabb being listed among the “Dynamic Defenders.” Alabama’s coaching staff is hopeful that Sabb can make a smooth transition and become a vital part of their defense, though replacing Downs’ impact will be no small feat. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on these two standout safeties as they look to make their mark on college football in 2024.
