The Cleveland Browns are being advised to devise an “exit strategy” for quarterback Deshaun Watson after he faced a new sexual assault allegation.
Watson, who is expected to play in the Browns’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, is accused of “roughly sexually assaulting” a woman in her apartment while preparing for a date. The NFL is currently investigating the claim, but Watson will not be placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, which would have allowed him paid leave during the inquiry.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Watson would start the upcoming game.
Jason Lloyd of The Athletic strongly opposes the Browns’ decision to continue fielding Watson, questioning how the team can present him as the franchise’s face amid such uncertainty.
Lloyd highlighted that the Houston Texans benched Watson throughout the 2021 season while addressing both trade issues and multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Furthermore, if the Browns discover that Watson was aware of the latest allegation and failed to disclose it before signing his contract, they may have legal grounds to void the $230 million deal.
Attorney Tony Buzbee, representing the accuser, revealed that the woman will meet with the NFL and that there is additional evidence, including video and witnesses.
Buzbee criticized Watson’s legal team for not addressing the case earlier despite being informed nearly a year ago. If Watson misses time, the Browns may turn to backup options, including Jameis Winston, signed in the offseason.
