The Houston Texans have added former Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. to their practice squad after tight end Brevin Jordan was placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.
Smith, who had been out of the NFL since being released by the Kansas City Chiefs in August, was signed to the Texans’ practice squad on Wednesday. Smith initially joined Kansas City as a free agent in March but was cut before the start of the regular season.
Jordan had been a key part of the Texans’ offense, playing 67 snaps over the team’s first two games, while Dalton Schultz has led the tight ends with 107 snaps. Cade Stover, the other tight end on the Texans’ active roster, has also contributed with 29 snaps, mainly playing fullback. The Texans currently have Dalton Keene as another option on their practice squad.
Smith, drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, has struggled with injuries throughout his career. He missed the entire 2021 season due to a torn meniscus and parts of 2022 with an ankle injury.
In his four years with the Vikings, he recorded 66 receptions, 676 yards, and seven touchdowns. Smith played with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023, catching 18 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown across 12 games.
