Las Vegas Raiders’ defense has emerged as a key strength in the first two games of the season, despite a shaky start from the offense.

While the team showed improvements offensively in the second half of their win against the Baltimore Ravens, their defense has remained consistently strong.

Several standout names on the defensive side include Malcolm Koonce, Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins, Jack Jones, and Tre’Von Moehrig. However, one player who has flown under the radar but made a significant impact is middle linebacker Robert Spillane.

Playing middle linebacker requires a deep understanding of the game, as the position is often referred to as the “quarterback of the defense.”

Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham praised Spillane’s intellect and ability to quickly analyze plays, highlighting his balance of mental and physical skills.

“Spill is a very focused individual,” Graham shared in an interview with The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “He consumes the game plan and coaching points, allowing him to anticipate plays and make fast decisions.”

Spillane made a crucial interception during the Ravens game when Las Vegas was down by 10. His play set up the Raiders in a strong field position, which helped them outscore Baltimore 20-7 in the remaining half, ultimately securing the win.

Spillane’s ability to anticipate plays before the snap has made him a standout, even among the Raiders’ notable defensive lineup. His contributions have solidified his role as a vital, yet often overlooked, part of the team.
