In a much-anticipated fourth-round match at the 2024 China Open, Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals after Naomi Osaka was forced to retire due to injury.
Osaka, who recently returned to the WTA Tour after maternity leave, was aiming for her fourth consecutive win in the tournament. The match saw Osaka dominate the first set 6-3, benefiting from several errors by Gauff. However, Gauff responded strongly in the second set, taking an early 2-0 lead before securing the set 6-4. Unfortunately, Osaka began showing signs of physical discomfort during the set and ultimately retired, ending the contest prematurely.
Following the match, Gauff expressed her disappointment, saying:
“No one wants to win like this, especially at 1 set all.” She extended her well wishes to Osaka, praising her performance and resilience. Gauff added, “I told her she should be proud of herself. It’s not easy, especially after having a baby. Hopefully, she’ll be fine soon.”
Gauff, demonstrating sportsmanship, assisted Osaka in carrying her kit off the court. As she prepares for her quarterfinal match against Yuliia Starodubtseva, Gauff remains focused on her campaign, aiming to improve on last year’s semifinal finish.
