TSN’s Darren Dreger provided fresh insights into the Toronto Maple Leafs’ contract discussions with forward Matthew Knies and defenseman Jake McCabe.

According to Dreger, the Leafs are keeping negotiations under wraps, but there have been notable developments concerning both players.

Knies, set to become a restricted free agent at season’s end, has yet to see significant contract discussions.

“There really hasn’t been any meaningful dialogue between Knies’ agent and the Toronto Maple Leafs,”

Dreger revealed, adding that talks could intensify later in the season, depending on whether either side is ready to engage.

On the other hand, Dreger mentioned that talks with veteran defenseman Jake McCabe have been more consistent. While the two sides are close, there is no urgency yet as McCabe becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season.

“He’s most definitely interested in getting something done sooner than later,” Dreger concluded.

As for Knies, insiders are debating whether to offer a long-term deal or opt for a shorter bridge contract. With 15 goals and 35 points in his first full season, his future value could rise.

McCabe, meanwhile, could secure a deal similar to Adam Larsson’s four-year, $5.25 million contract with Seattle.
