The Detroit Lions have extended the stay of standout running back David Montgomery, locking him into a two-year contract extension valued at $18.25 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the news, which the team later confirmed. The new agreement keeps Montgomery under contract through the 2027 season.
Montgomery, 27, joined the Lions in 2023 after four seasons with the Chicago Bears, where he achieved a career-high 1,070 rushing yards in 2020.
In his debut season with Detroit, Montgomery racked up 1,286 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on 282 carries, adding 211 receiving yards from 25 receptions. His arrival complemented rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions’ 2023 first-round pick, forming a dynamic backfield duo that propelled Detroit to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.
So far in the 2024 season, Montgomery has amassed 271 yards and four touchdowns on 63 carries over four games. After their bye week, Montgomery and the Lions will face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
