Thomas Tuchel is reportedly considering dropping Jordan Pickford from his role as England’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Pickford, a long-time favorite of former manager Gareth Southgate, now faces uncertainty about his future as the German tactician prepares to make bold decisions.
Tuchel, officially taking charge in January 2024, has a clear mission focused on the upcoming World Cup. The former Chelsea manager is expected to introduce significant changes, and Pickford’s spot appears to be in jeopardy. Although the 30-year-old Everton goalkeeper has 71 caps and was a trusted figure under Southgate, Tuchel’s arrival suggests that prior performances will not guarantee selection.
The Telegraph reports that Tuchel aims to build a cohesive squad rather than rely solely on individual talent. “We may not look for the 24 best individuals but the best group,” Tuchel said, stressing his willingness to make unpopular decisions to form a competitive team.
Pickford’s recent performances have not helped his case. After struggling against Greece under interim manager Lee Carsley, Dean Henderson replaced him in England’s match against Finland. With Nick Pope also in contention and Aaron Ramsdale gaining momentum at Southampton, Tuchel’s goalkeeping choices remain unpredictable.
As Tuchel prepares for England’s 18-month journey to the 2026 World Cup, it remains uncertain which three goalkeepers will make the final cut.
