Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields appears to have lost his starting role to Russell Wilson, though head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to officially confirm it.

As reported by Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports on October 18, Fields is now viewed as the top quarterback trade candidate in the NFL. Dajani noted:

“Could Fields be traded again? Maybe. I’d be a little miffed if I led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 4-2 record while completing a career-high 66.3% of my passes and scoring 10 total touchdowns compared to one interception [and got benched].”

Dajani also discussed Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young as a possible trade option, though he acknowledged that a deal involving the former Alabama star is unlikely.

“Then, there’s Young,” Dajani continued. “I have a hard time believing the Carolina Panthers will trade him after mortgaging the future of the franchise for the former Alabama star. But it’s possible. It would probably be beneficial for him.”

The Panthers, under first-year head coach Dave Canales, may need a more reliable long-term quarterback option than veteran Andy Dalton, who won his first start but lost three subsequent games by a combined 54 points.

Fields, still only 25 and in the final year of his rookie contract, has shown improvement in Pittsburgh with a higher completion rate and athleticism. Dajani pondered whether Fields could be the answer Carolina hoped for when they drafted Young first overall.

“Almost certainly not,” he concluded, “but he has the potential to be better than anything the franchise has had in a while.”
