Two former Boston Red Sox minor leaguers have secured new opportunities through free agency.
Utility player Pablo Reyes has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees, as reported by Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. Reyes, who played for the Red Sox from 2023 to mid-2024 before being traded to the Mets for cash considerations, batted .287/.339/.377 over 64 games during the 2024 season. However, his MLB numbers dropped to .183/.234/.217 in 21 appearances.
Reyes briefly joined the Mets’ major league roster on September 1 when rosters expanded but was designated for assignment just days later without a single plate appearance. While with Triple-A Syracuse, he delivered an impressive .290/.371/.493 slash line over 63 games. Now part of the Yankees organization, Reyes is expected to bring his versatility to their Triple-A team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Over his six-year career, he has played at every position except catcher and pitcher, though he has pitched in emergencies.
Meanwhile, the Mets have signed former Red Sox prospect Justin Hagenman to a major league deal. Hagenman, acquired by Boston in the Kiké Hernández trade with the Dodgers in 2023, posted a 4.91 ERA in 91.2 innings for Triple-A Worcester during his first full season in the Red Sox system. Not included on Boston’s 40-man roster, he opted for free agency and has now secured a major league deal with the Mets.
The move provides Hagenman with an opportunity he likely wouldn’t have received with the Red Sox.
