The New York Yankees’ primary focus remains re-signing Juan Soto to a contract likely exceeding $600 million.

Should Soto stay, the team plans to turn its attention to more affordable options like Walker Buehler and Christian Walker to address additional roster gaps. However, if Soto opts for another team, the Yankees are preparing an extensive contingency plan.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have conducted interviews with several high-profile free agents, including pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. While these talks suggest preparations for a backup plan, the team’s primary focus remains Soto.

No offers have been made to these pitchers, who are considered fallback options in case Soto signs with rivals such as the Mets, Dodgers, Red Sox, or Blue Jays.

The Yankees’ interest in starting pitchers like Burnes and Fried is somewhat surprising, given their current rotation depth. Yet, their pursuit reflects a desire to assemble a more dominant staff. The team is also exploring reinforcements across the infield, outfield, bullpen, and rotation.

Notably, the Yankees recently held a Zoom meeting with Blake Snell, although he ultimately signed a five-year, $182 million deal with the Dodgers.

The free agency landscape is set for upheaval as Soto’s decision looms. New York’s backup plan signals readiness to make bold moves in response to the league’s evolving dynamics.
