The Philadelphia Phillies, seeking to enhance their roster during the offseason, are reportedly exploring various options to bolster their starting rotation.
Despite boasting a strong lineup, their 2024 season ended in disappointment during October’s crucial games. One area marked for improvement is the rotation slot currently occupied by Taijuan Walker, whose performance last season resulted in a concerning 7.10 ERA across 19 games.
While players like Garrett Crochet and Max Fried are considered potential additions, international free agent Roki Sasaki has emerged as a top target. Sasaki, a Japanese sensation yet to play in Major League Baseball, has drawn widespread interest. Christopher Kline of FanSided emphasized the Phillies’ opportunity to sign Sasaki using funds initially intended for pursuing Juan Soto.
Kline highlighted that Sasaki’s limited professional experience makes him ineligible for a high-value contract like the one Yoshinobu Yamamoto received.
Instead, Sasaki will likely sign a standard international prospect deal. “Sasaki is expected to prioritize organizational fit over monetary offers,” Kline noted, adding that the Phillies could offer him a strong environment with three All-Star starters and a proven track record of nurturing ace pitchers.
Despite the Phillies’ appeal, securing Sasaki won’t be easy. With all 30 MLB teams competing for his signature, his future destination remains uncertain.
While Sasaki could greatly strengthen Philadelphia’s rotation, the team must demonstrate why they are the best fit for his career.
