The Pittsburgh Steelers have finalized their 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 NFL season, a process that required cutting down from the 90 players who participated in training camp.
Notably, the roster includes 22 new faces who were not part of the active squad in 2023, signaling a significant transformation.
The quarterback room has seen the most change, with Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen all joining the team this offseason, while some teams opted to keep only two quarterbacks.
Rookie John Rhys Plumlee, who led in kick returns during the preseason, was released but could return on the practice squad. The Steelers also used league rules to place offensive tackle Dylan Cook and outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon on short-term injured reserve, allowing them to return later in the season.
This decision influenced the team’s choice to keep only three true outside linebackers, though defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal could serve in that role if needed.
The team made other strategic roster decisions, including keeping eight defensive linemen, one more than last season, and adding an extra tight end. This reflects the new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s preference for multiple tight end sets, which may reduce the need for additional wide receivers.
The Steelers also maintained five cornerbacks and five wide receivers, potentially indicating a focus on bolstering other positions.
Injuries affected the roster as well, with rookie Ryan Watts placed on season-ending injured reserve and Cole Holcomb, a starting inside linebacker, beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list. Despite these challenges, the Steelers have assembled a roster that balances new talent with strategic depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.
