Jazz Chisholm Jr., the New York Yankees’ recent trade deadline acquisition, is still adapting to playing third base, and manager Aaron Boone is calling for patience as the young player navigates the challenges of his new position.
On Tuesday night, in a 4-1 loss to the Washington Nationals, Chisholm committed another error, contributing to a frustrating night for the Yankees, who were unable to score until the 8th inning. Aaron Judge’s double play brought in their only run, and the team made a total of four defensive errors, with Chisholm’s mistake in the first inning setting the tone.
Boone addressed Chisholm’s performance candidly after the game, stating:
“Still learning, like I said from jump. On balance, it’s been really good to elite. These reps will be really valuable for him, and these plays will be really good learning things for him moving forward.”
This latest error brings Chisholm’s total to six in 18 games at third base since joining the Yankees.
The error occurred on a ground ball hit by James Wood, where Chisholm’s throw pulled first baseman DJ LeMahieu off the bag, initially ruled a hit before being changed to an error. Chisholm, who previously played centerfield and second base for the Miami Marlins, is still adjusting to his new role, having never played third base before joining the Yankees.
Despite his defensive struggles, Chisholm has been a vital spark for the Yankees’ offense. He has hit eight home runs in his 18 games with the team, maintaining a .293 average with five stolen bases and a .982 OPS.
His energy and production have been crucial as the Yankees have surged back into first place in the American League East, currently holding a 1.5 game lead over the Baltimore Orioles, even after Tuesday’s loss.
