As Aaron Rai approaches the final round of the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, golf fans are not only watching his performance but also his distinctive style.

Rai, a 29-year-old English golfer, is tied for the lead at Detroit Golf Club, aiming for his first PGA Tour victory. His habits on the course—wearing two gloves and using iron covers—are more than mere quirks; they are deeply rooted in personal history.

Rai’s signature style began in his youth. He recalls being gifted a pair of gloves, leading to his habit of wearing both on the course.

This preference solidified during a memorable incident when his father forgot to pack his gloves.

“I had to play with just one,” Rai said. “It was terrible. I couldn’t feel the grip, so I’ve stuck with two gloves ever since.”

The use of iron covers also has sentimental origins. Growing up in a working-class family, Rai’s father always ensured he had quality equipment, despite financial constraints.

At just seven years old, Rai received a set of Titleist 690 MB irons, which he treasured.

“My dad paid for everything—my equipment, membership, and entry fees,” Rai recalled. “He would clean every groove with a pin and baby oil. To protect the clubs, he added iron covers, and I’ve used them ever since.”

Rai’s dedication to maintaining his equipment serves as a tribute to his father’s sacrifices. Despite now receiving his gear for free, he continues to use iron covers, emphasizing the importance of not forgetting his roots.

“It’s about valuing what I have and remembering where I came from,” he said.

As Rai competes for victory, his unique practices remain a testament to his humble beginnings and the enduring support of his family. Regardless of the outcome, Rai’s story resonates with fans, making him a player worth rooting for.
