Serie A giants AC Milan are reportedly nearing a deal for Sheffield United midfielder Vini Souza.

Journalist Alan Nixon, writing on Patreon, disclosed this development, signaling a significant setback for Sheffield United ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 Championship season, set to commence in less than two weeks.

According to Nixon, while Premier League side Fulham has shown considerable interest in acquiring the Brazilian player, it is AC Milan that is making the most substantial efforts behind the scenes to secure the transfer of the 25-year-old.

Souza, who is under contract at Bramall Lane until 2027, is widely expected to depart the club this summer, despite having joined only a season ago. Nixon’s report highlights that Milan’s interest is partly driven by their need to address issues with ‘foreign’ player quotas in the domestic league. With Souza holding a Portuguese passport, he qualifies as a European player, thus easing Milan’s quota concerns.

Earlier reports from mid-July indicated that Fulham had a £15 million bid for Souza rejected by Sheffield United. Despite this, both Fulham and AC Milan have remained persistent in their pursuit throughout the transfer window, with Milan now appearing to lead the race for his signature. Sheffield United, having relegated to the Championship, are holding out for a transfer fee exceeding £30 million for Souza, who is eager to leave the club.

While losing Souza would be a blow, especially after just 12 months into his four-year contract, Sheffield United has bolstered their midfield with new signings like Callum O’Hare from Coventry City and has capable players such as Gustavo Hamer. Additionally, young talents like Ollie Arblaster and Anis Ben Slimane show promise, potentially mitigating the impact of Souza’s departure.

Manager Chris Wilder may further strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes, ensuring the team remains competitive in the Championship.
