Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to face challenges in proving himself as the team’s long-term leader.
Over the last two seasons, several obstacles have prevented the Browns from making a clear assessment of his capabilities. In 2022, a suspension kept Watson off the field for the first 11 games, while injuries plagued his 2023 season, limiting him to just parts of six games.
This season, injuries to the offensive line have further hindered his ability to perform at a high level.
Football analyst Matt Fontana argues that Watson’s poor performance in a recent game against the New York Giants should not be harshly judged.
He stated that the quarterback could not be fairly evaluated given the team’s weakened offensive line. Fontana expressed his frustration, saying:
“All I wanted, and maybe I just thought it was going to happen, is that I would get an honest run of an evaluation without all of this other crap.”
The discussion sparked a debate between Fontana and the show’s producer, Ryan Tyler, over whether Watson’s performance should be criticized under such difficult circumstances.
Fontana believes it’s impossible to judge Watson fairly until he is supported by a healthy, functioning line.
