In a recent discussion, former Newcastle United striker Andy Cole suggested that Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga could be a strong replacement for Anthony Gordon if the latter moves to Liverpool. Cole’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation about Gordon’s future at Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon, who was named Newcastle’s player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign, has been linked with Liverpool following an impressive season where he scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists. Despite Newcastle’s intention to retain him, talks with Liverpool have taken place, and Gordon’s affinity for Liverpool, being a boyhood fan, makes the potential transfer plausible.

In response to the potential departure of Gordon, Cole pointed to Elanga as a viable replacement. Elanga, who joined Nottingham Forest from Manchester United last summer for £15 million, made a notable impact in his debut season, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Cole praised Elanga’s attributes, emphasizing his pace, directness, and ability to create opportunities for teammates, which were evident in his performances against Newcastle during the past season.

Newcastle, while navigating the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, recently completed transfers involving youngsters Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, showing their focus on strategic moves. However, the club remains intent on strengthening their squad, particularly in the wide positions. Elanga’s performance, including scoring in Forest’s 3-2 defeat to Newcastle and assisting in the reverse fixture’s 3-1 win, showcases his potential value to Newcastle.

Cole expressed confidence in Elanga’s capabilities, noting his growth since leaving Manchester United and his positive contributions in a struggling Nottingham Forest team. Elanga’s youth, enthusiasm, and learning curve position him as a promising addition to Newcastle should Gordon’s transfer to Liverpool materialize.
