Golfer Richie Ramsay has hailed Sir Andy Murray as the perfect mentor for Scottish athletes across various sports, following Murray’s retirement from professional tennis.
In an interview with BBC Scotland, Ramsay emphasized the impact Murray’s experience could have on elite athletes, describing him as an “icon” and someone whose presence demands attention.
“If he was willing, he should mentor elite athletes in Scotland,” Ramsay said. “If he walks into a room, it stops. If he speaks, I’m laser-focused because what he says means so much. He’s walked the walk, and that’s why there’s such respect for him. You just need to look at what Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal say about him.”
Though Murray has retired from tennis, recently appearing at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am, he seems to have ruled out coaching due to his reluctance to travel, particularly with four young children.
Ramsay suggested that Murray could also be invaluable to golfers like Rory McIlroy, as McIlroy chases his elusive Masters title.
“If I were Rory, I’d be flying Andy out, tapping into his brain about pressure and preparation,” Ramsay added.
