Andy Murray is reportedly heartbroken following the news that Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from their mixed doubles match at Wimbledon.
The 37-year-old tennis star had announced that this year’s tournament would be his last, planning to retire after the Olympic Games in Paris later this summer. This decision came after undergoing surgery on a spinal cyst just last month.
Initially, Murray intended to compete in the men’s singles but had to shift his focus to doubles due to his recent surgery. He partnered with his brother, Jamie, in the men’s doubles and had plans to team up with Raducanu in the mixed doubles. Unfortunately, Murray and his brother faced defeat against Australian players John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in straight sets.
This loss was compounded when Raducanu pulled out of their mixed doubles match due to stiffness in her right wrist, confirming that Murray had played his final match at Wimbledon.
Raducanu expressed her disappointment, stating:
“I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy, but I’ve got to take care.” Murray’s mother, Judy, also reacted on social media, calling the withdrawal “astonishing.”
Due to tournament rules, Murray is unable to replace Raducanu with another partner, marking a premature end to his final campaign at the All England Club.
In an emotional interview with Sue Barker on Centre Court, Murray paid tribute to his family and support team, acknowledging the significant challenges they have faced together over the years due to his injuries.
Murray’s farewell was marked by heartfelt gratitude for his team’s support, highlighting the physical and emotional struggles that have defined his recent career.
