Bill Belichick, the legendary former head coach of the New England Patriots, has openly criticized the team’s strategy under his successor, Jerod Mayo, following a disappointing start to the 2024 NFL season.
In an interview on the Pat McAfee Show, Belichick expressed confusion about the team’s direction, saying:
“I’ll be honest with you, I have no idea what the plan is.”
The Patriots have slumped to a 1-3 record, most recently suffering a 30-13 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, where they accumulated only 216 yards and allowed quarterback Jacoby Brissett to be sacked six times.
Mayo, who served under Belichick for several years before taking over, has faced increasing pressure to make better use of rookie quarterback Drake Maye, drafted third overall in 2024.
Belichick highlighted multiple issues, from the team’s inability to move the ball to poor pass rush, commenting that 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had an excessive amount of time to throw. While he praised kicker Joey Slye as a bright spot, Belichick’s overall assessment was blunt, concluding that significant changes are needed on both sides of the ball.
