Boston Red Sox owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are reportedly considering a significant move into the NBA, with a potential $6 billion takeover of the Boston Celtics on the horizon.
This move could involve Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who has been a partner with FSG since purchasing a stake in Liverpool in 2011 and becoming a full partner three years ago.
FSG, which already owns the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been actively exploring opportunities in the sports world. Their interest in the Celtics, a franchise with a storied history, has been fueled by the team’s recent success, including an 18th NBA title.
The current Celtics owner, Wyc Grousbeck, surprised the sports community by announcing his intention to sell the team, with the Celtics valued at approximately $6 billion.
James’ involvement could prove complex due to NBA regulations preventing active players from owning teams. However, as James is expected to retire in the coming years, his role in this acquisition could materialize, potentially leading to a new chapter in his career.
Additionally, James has long expressed interest in bringing an NBA team to Las Vegas, a move that FSG might reconsider if they secure the Celtics.
